Our Story
A story still being written
Since 1897, Southern Light has brought generations of people together through musical theatre. Every rehearsal, every performance and every production has added another chapter to a story that continues today. More than a century later, that tradition lives on, with every new production becoming part of Southern Light's continuing story.
“On the evening of the 6th March 1897, in the Union Hotel, Cockburn Street, Edinburgh (not now in existence), there met some 19 ladies and 20 gentlemen who formed themselves into the Southern Light Opera Company.”
The beginning
The first chapter
The entry was written in 1897 and records the founding of what became Edinburgh’s oldest amateur operatic society.
The Company took its name from the many founding members who lived on the south side of the city. They came together to perform light opera in Edinburgh, beginning a legacy that now spans three centuries.
